Retail Continues To Implode - What Comes Next In These Spaces?

The multiple announcements of store closures and bankruptcies have been well-detailed in the media. Example:

We will be looking at multiple large-scale vacant spaces and massive swaths of asphalt in the future. Re-purposing those spaces will be a challenge, from a space standpoint and quality of construction standpoint. Some buildings, such as old factories and hospitals, are already being reused as housing. But would you want to live in a condominium in an old shopping mall where the central corridor becomes a pedestrian "Main Street?"

These are issues that the current/next generation of Architects will need to consider -- or find themselves without a seat at the table for whatever redevelopment does occur.
